Where to Ask About a Person or Record
Use the legal custodian and the question type to select a destination:
- Current county-jail status: Stephenson County Jail and the Sheriff’s official custom app.
- County release time, authority, disposition, or booking photo: Stephenson County Sheriff FOIA.
- Bond, dismissal, probation, sentence, or signed order: Stephenson County Circuit Clerk.
- Illinois prison, parole/MSR, or archived state record: IDOC and, where relevant, PRB.
- Release or transfer notification: Illinois VINE.
- Federal or immigration custody: BOP, the federal docket, or ICE, as applicable.
Stephenson County Jail
Address: 1680 E. Singer Drive, Freeport, IL 61032
Telephone: (815) 235-8254
Operator: Stephenson County Sheriff’s Office Corrections Division
The Sheriff states that its free custom smartphone app is the only inmate-search method. Its bail and release page also states that release dates and times are not given out and warns that processing can take several hours after bail is posted. For an older or exact release record, use the written FOIA route.
Sheriff Records and FOIA
Office: Stephenson County Sheriff administrative offices
Address: 15 N. Galena Avenue, third floor, Freeport, IL 61032
Hours: Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., except legal or court holidays
FOIA officer: Operations Support Manager Alyssa Wales
Email: StephensonCountySheriffFOIA@stephensoncountyil.gov
Fax: (815) 235-8306, marked “Attn FOIA Officer”
The current Sheriff FOIA channel accepts an online submission, downloadable form, mail, email, fax, or in-person written request. Identify the person and booking episode, then ask for the actual release date and time, disposition or destination, release authority, booking number, and any other specific record needed. The Sheriff can provide only records it controls.
Stephenson County Court Records
Office: Stephenson County Circuit Clerk at the courthouse
Address: 15 N. Galena Avenue, Freeport, IL
Hours: 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Official directory telephone: (815) 235-8266
Stephenson County participates in Judici for case searching, while the Circuit Clerk remains the official custodian. Use the docket to locate the case, then request the signed or certified order when a bond, probation, sentence, dismissal, warrant, or discharge must be established precisely.
IDOC, Parole, and VINE
Use the IDOC Individual in Custody Search for people committed to Illinois state prison and still incarcerated or on parole/MSR. For a completed sentence that no longer appears, use IDOC’s Contact Us form and select “Record Search.”
The Illinois Prisoner Review Board handles specified conditions, hearings, revocation matters, and final-discharge actions. Its general information number is (217) 782-7273. PRB FOIA requests use its dedicated FOIA channel rather than the operations email.
Illinois VINE offers free, confidential custody and court-status alerts at 1-866-566-8439, 24 hours a day. IDOC Victim Services registration assistance is available at (877) 776-0755, although IDOC does not administer VINE registration data.
